The discovery of an abundance of coral near the sea-side town of Torre del Greco, Italy, heralded the production of shell jewelry during the nineteenth century. Victorians believed in the power of shell and thought it could ward off evil. shell jewelry was plentiful in the Victorian era and flourished well into the 1860's. Made of the skeletons of marine animals, shell is a calcium carbonate substance in a wide range of colors in pinks and reds as well as white and black. Carvers found shell to possess a quality of softness that made it desirable to work with and a wide variety of designs were created. Pieces carved in high relief are the most rare and are most sought after by collectors.
